Consumer Alert: Door to Door Sales of Water Filtration Systems
Peterborough, Ontario
Peterborough Utilities Group is issuing this alert to consumers regarding recent tactics of door to door sales of water filtration systems. Consumers have reported that sales agents have stated that the installation of the water filtration systems are mandated by the government or that installation is part of the Peterborough Utilities water meter project. Both statements are false.
The tap water delivered to our customers is tested in accordance with provincial regulations and meets or exceeds these standards for water quality and does not require any further treatment.
Additionally, customers are reporting that sales staff are showing consumers images of water piping in disrepair and stating that they need to get inside the home to inspect the plumbing for potential problems. Peterborough Utilities is pro-active with the maintenance of the water mains and water services in the City of Peterborough. Unless you are experiencing specific issues with your water service, there is no need to allow anyone into your home. We caution consumers not to let strangers into their homes as customers have reported that some sales staff are very aggressive and have tried to force their way into their homes.
All Peterborough Utilities staff can produce picture identification upon request. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding the validity of the person at your door, contact Peterborough Utilities at 705-748-9300. Unfortunately, many of the sales agents visit after normal business hours.
Sales staff have indicated the installation of the filtration system is free, however we believe that there is a monthly rental fee associated with the filtration unit. Customers are cautioned to read the fine print should they decide to enter into an agreement and for any customer that has signed a contract and wishes to cancel, there is a mandatory 10 day “Cooling Off” period in which consumers can cancel their contract without penalty.
