Generation Connections

Generation Connections

Customers requiring connections to the Peterborough Distribution Inc. (PDI) electrical distribution system for generation are required to have a valid Ontario Power Authority (OPA) micro-FIT or FIT contract.

To determine if there is existing capacity on our system click here to see capacity allocated currently on our distribution system. Some generators may be Capacity Allocation Exempt but still require connection information and are subject to Connection Impact Assessments (CIA).

Generators should review the capacity limits and generator size limitations on the Peterborough Distribution Inc. distribution system located in section 3.9.2 of our Conditions of Service click here.

The first step is to contact Peterborough Distribution Inc. to determine the connection point on the distribution system for the proposed generation. The Transformer Station and Feeder designation are required for your OPA contract application.

Depending on the size of your project there may be a requirement to perform a Distribution Availability Test (DAT). If your project is Capacity Allocation Exempt it will not require this test.

Once you have received and accepted the contract offer from the OPA, you need to formally request a connection to the distribution system and PDI will initiate the Connection Impact Assessment (CIA) process to determine the conditions under which the generation may be connected. There are fees to perform this assessment both by PDI and Hydro One Networks who own and operate the transformer stations. (There are no CIA fees for micro-FIT applications). If a Hydro One Network Inc. CIA is required the generator will be required to fill out Form B for submission to Hydro One Networks. Form B can be found on the Hydro One Networks Inc. website under the FIT heading click here.

To initiate a connection request with PDI the generator must fill out the Electric Service Change Request form (for an existing connection) or New Electric Service Request (for new connections) located on our website click here and forwards the completed form to the Engineering Department along with the technical information on the proposed generation facility and the Connection Impact Assessment fees. The amount of the fee is dependant on the size and complexity of the generation connection. click here to see fee schedule.

Technical information required with the Electric Service Request includes the following:

  • Location/Address of the proposed generation connection
  • Name plate capacity
  • Connection Schematic
  • Fuel type and technology
  • Protection Scheme

Additionally, generators will be responsible to pay for the metering costs and the upgrades to or installation of new service connection facilities to accommodate the connection of the generation to the distribution system. Generators will be required to pay deposits for metering and connection costs at the time the Offer to Connect is made. (This includes micro-FIT applications). Generators will be required to enter into a Connection Agreement with PDI. Connection Agreements will be in the form as described in the Ontario Energy Board Distribution System Code.
