Smart Meter Information

When Time of Use rates are implemented, Smart Meters can help you decrease your electricity costs.  They not only measure the amount of electricity you use each month,  but they are smart enough to know at what time of day that electricity was used.  By shifting your electricity usage to cheaper times of the day or reducing your use, you can reduce your energy bills.  Smart Meters give you daily information about your previous day's consumption pattern, which lets you make changes to your activities and habits to shift your energy usage away from peak, and more expensive, times of the day.

Smart Meters Are Here!

We have substantially completed the installation of Smart Meters in Peterborough, Lakefield and Norwood.

If you would like to know more about how smart meters work see our guide on How Smart Meters Work.  Also, how electricity pricing will change in the future and how you can take advantage of smart metering.

PDI customers are not currently on time-of-use rates.  We are continuing to work on integrating our smart meter system with the Provincial system this year.  We expect time-of-use rates will be introduced early in May.  Look for more information in the coming months.

What are the Time-Of-Use Rates?

Under the price plan for smart meters, the price that consumers pay for electricity will vary based on the period during the day when the electricity is used:  on-peak, mid-peak and off-peak.  These periods are different in the summer than they are in the winter.  Changes to the peak period will now have 108 of 168 hours in a typical week as off-peak hours.  The Ontario Energy Board sets time-of-use rates and answers Frequently Asked Questions.
