PROGRAM SESSIONS
November 2011 - Otterly Amazing
Let’s learn about the Otters! Otters spend a lot of time in the water and have many adaptations that allow them to swim, stay warm, and catch food. Children will learn about parts of their body as compared with the parts of an otter’s body, how they are similar, and why they are different?
December 2011 - FURocious Friends
Animals don’t wear mitts or toques, or winter boots, but do they wear winter coats? Children will learn about how animals survive in winter by growing winter coats, using built-in “snowshoes” to walk on the snow and by using other useful adaptations to obtain food and stay warm all winter long.
January 2012 – Scales and Scutes
Meet some of our resident snakes and tortoises while learning all about the wondrous world of reptiles - some are colourful while some blend in; some have four legs but some don’t have any; some have scales and some have scutes.
February 2012 – Iguana have some fun!
Now that you investigated the world of reptiles, let’s learn more about lizards. The unique shapes and colours of our Riverview lizards help them to blend in to their surroundings and to catch their food. Watch a chameleon’s long tongue as he is fed, and meet our newest animal, a large green iguana
March 2012 – Critter Comforts
What would it be like to live at the zoo? Learn about all the ways the zookeepers care for the animals by stimulating their senses. During this session, we will pretend to be zoo animals and investigate our senses. We will also make an animal enrichment item to introduce to a zoo animal.
April 2012 – Lil’ Keepers
Become a certified L’l Keeper! Children can bring their favourite stuffed animal for a health check-up by a real veterinarian. We will learn about how the animals stay healthy here at Riverview with the help of animal doctors and zookeepers. Children will receive their own Lil’ Keeper certificate.
