75th Anniversary Celebrations!

75th Logo2
This
year, the Riverview Park and Zoo is celebrating our 75th Anniversary. In celebration of this milestone, we are hosting a number of events throughout the year, culminating with our first annual fundraising Gala, in August 2010.

All funds raised from our 75th Anniversary celebrations will help Riverview to build an animal care building that will house animals in need of special attention due to health care requirements. Constructing this facility is also a condition for our continued accreditation with the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums and to benefit the welfare of our entire animal collection. The estimated cost for the animal care building is $450,000.00, all of which we hope to raise though fundraising efforts throughout the year.

Peterborough Children's Water FestivalWater Festival Logo

The Peterborough Children's Water Festival (PCWF) is a community event held at the Riverview Park and Zoo.  Through interactive activity centres students in grades 2 to 5 learn the importance of our most valuable resource - water.  Indirectly, teachers, adults and high school volunteers are also exposed to messages of water protection and conservation for future generations and environmental health.

The festival revolves around a variety of stimulating and fun activities supported by the expertise of educators, water quality and quantity specialists, community volunteers, conservation groups, industry and government.

2009 marked the 8th annual PCWF.  This year 998 students from the City and County of Peterborough attended the festival.  Over 160 high school and adult volunteers worked at 35 water themed activity centres.

Since its inception, over 12,000 students and 2,950 teachers and parent helpers have attended the festival.  The 9th annual festival will take place May 27 and 28, 2010.

The festival is organized and overseen by a dedicated Steering Committee that has adopted the "Children's Water Festival" model of fostering awareness of our youth.  It educates others about the importance of water and the need to ensure high quality water resources for future generations and the health of our environment.
