Remote Meter Reading

Your Elster water meter will send the water usage information remotely to the electric Smart Meter already installed on the outside of your home.  The remote (wireless) communication uses radio frequency technology, this is the same technology that is used in other household appliances such as cordless phones, garage door openers, microwaves, internet routers and TV/VCR/DVD remote controls. 

Your water meter only transmits less than one second over a 24-hour period and is powered by a 20-year battery.  

Health Canada has exposure guidelines to radiofrequency electromagnetic energy.  This information can be found in Limits of Human Exposure to Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Energy in the Frequency Range from 3 kHz to 300 GHz - Safety Code 6 (2009).  The safety limits in this code are based on an ongoing review of published scientific studies, including both internal and external authoritative reviews of the scientific literature, as well as Health Canada's own research.  Additional information can be reviewed byclicking here.

Are Elster Meters below RF energy at levels below the regulatory limits?

Health Canada’s guideline document and most other RF exposure standards specify “time-averaged” maximum exposure limits.  The meter never transmits or requests readings continuously over the six-minute period specified by Health Canada and therefore the exposure from the Elster Meter is significantly less than the maximum level set by Health Canada.

Will the Radio Frequency in the meter interfere with other devices in my home?

The Radio Frequency is the same type of energy used for cordless telephones; radio and television broadcasting; cellular telephones; personal communications services (PCS); pagers; police, fire, and airport radios; and microwave communications. However, the amount of energy emitted by the water meter transmitter is far less and in a different frequency band than most of these other devices. Also, the water meter radios use frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) technology which is designed to prevent interference even with other devices that use the same frequency band.
